This summer, colour is the overarching theme. From vivid brights to pretty pastels every shade of the rainbow gets a look in. An easy way to add timeliness to a timeless suit this season is with a sheer blouse in coral, fuchsia or lime green or a silk camisole in mint, baby pink or lemon. Ditch the black heels and go for something with a little more vivacity – colour blocking in pastels or neons is ideal – and opt for open sandals or wedges instead of enclosed courts. You can add more colour with your accessories so look for two-tone totes and holdalls and throw in some statement gold jewellery.

When the temperature really starts to rise, leave the trousers at home and switch to a pencil or tulip skirt or tailored shorts. Shorts still look formal and are suitable for the office as long as they are made from high quality fabric and the fit is spot on. Add detail with a slit or fishtail on pencil skirts and a high waist and folds on tulip skirts.

Smart in the summer: Cream and navy stripe suit from Next, £85

When autumn makes a return try adding some coloured tights to your skirt or shorts combo rather than reverting straight back to trousers. You can get away with wearing jumpers and cardigans under your suit if you choose the right fit. A belt can add much needed shape and definition. Change back to closed shoes, but don’t switch to boots just yet; save them until high winter. For now wrap your feet up in richly coloured shoe boots and heeled brogues in shades of burgundy, navy and emerald green.

This winter heritage materials such as tweed and herringbone make a return. Add a touch of class to your winter suit with a tweed pea coat, mac or rich wool skirt and bring out the riding style knee-high boots. Perhaps because of this great sporting event the fashion industry has taken sporty fashion to a whole new level for summer 2012. Spring/summer 2012 catwalks were filled with luxury sportswear collections inspired by tennis, basketball and gymnastics with a rich, opulent edge. So think silk camis with running shorts, pleated chiffon tennis skirts with American football t-shirts and skinny cargo pants with sheer blouses. This is a fun and easy trend to work into both your daywear and your gym kit.

You can add a sporty touch to your daytime chic with a pair of hightop shoes. Already adopted by fashion-forward celebrities, these hightop trainers have hidden wedge heels to help lengthen legs without looking dressy. To add a luxury sport aspect to your gym wear, ditch your boyfriend t-shirts and swap them for high-tech sports camisoles in a silky, Lycra material. Leave your leggings at home for the summer and swap to running shorts and add some colour to your outfit: fuchsia, lime green and plenty of neon. Next has a pair of Sports Trainers for £45 in white with multi colour stripes on either side (pictured) that are perfect for giving your gym wear a trendy summer makeover.

If you can’t ditch the heels get sporty with tennis dresses and tennis skirts. Look for pleated skirts – preferably in white – and match with racer back camisoles and high-vis jogging jackets or hoodies.

You can get a sporty fix even more easily: sweatbands, headbands, visors and high ponytails can make any look a sporty look.

In terms of dresses UK fashion seems to be leading the way forward in terms of the European market as a whole, with British brands like Warehouse providing the steadiest influx of creative new designs (click the link to see their latest range). A key look for Spring is likely to be the striped, sailor inspired dress which is great news for those who like to indulge in fun new fashion styles that are also comfortable and wearable. A dress such as Warehouse’s Stripe Zip Cuff Dress (pictured) can be styled just as easily with Converse trainers in the daytime as it could with stiletto heels come nightfall. An excellent, all-year-round buy.

The UK market is also leading the way in terms of patterns and print designs. Known in the rest of the fashion world for our kooky sense of style, a printed dress is an easy way to rock a classic dresses UK look, but steer clear of the paisleys and tea-dress prints on the market this season and instead go for bolder, bigger and brighter patterns. Choose a colour scheme flattering to your complexion and you are sure to get heads turning in your direction.

One, particularly striking modern look for 2012 comes in the form of the piped detail dress. This is a look that fits in with the new wave towards sportswear inspired fashion in the run up to theLondon 2012 Olympics in July. Utilitarian colours like grey and black are given a dash of brightness with sporty trims in neon colours like yellow, green and pink. Choose your colours carefully on this one and be sure to play down your accessories, but if you like to work a cutting edge kind of look then this is sure to be the one for you.
